Description
Nuru, whose name means Light, arrived in a season no one agrees about. The elders tell it differently each time, and the differences have hardened into three separate truths, and the village keeps all three. She has never corrected any of them. A child who comes without a history will be given one, and Nuru accepted hers the way the river accepts rain.
She is small, and she is quiet, and the room arranges itself around her. There is a light on her that is not the fire’s, faint as the moon at midday. The marks upon her chest, the lizard chief among them, were cut by no hand in this village. Ask her what they mean. She will look at you until you stop asking. The earth speaks to her in the way the earth speaks, which is slowly, and without repeating itself, and she is the only one with the patience for it.
She mends what is broken, and this is known. What is not known is the other thing. She can reach into a man’s road and bend it. She has done it. He is alive today and calls it luck. She does this rarely, having decided, young as she is, that a road belongs to the one walking it, and that she will take that from a person only to turn away an ending that came too early and was never theirs to begin with. She has explained this to no one. She is a child. She has already handed down the hardest ruling in the village, and nobody knows a court was ever in session.
